Pedestrian Underpass Feasibility Study June 17, 1997
East Marietta Street and East Condit Street
limited in the number of personnel available to perform this
work and their own capital improvement work may take
precedence over this project;thus causing delays to a
contractor_ The railroad will also require a flagman on the
site during much of the construction time.
Construction of a subway will require the city to relocate an
existing water ma.in that lies near the center of the street.
Lighting in the subway will be required 24 hours a day, thus
increasing operation and ma.i.ntenance costs.
Snow and ice removal will be a maintenance item_ A subway
rvill allow the use of snow removal equipment, however,
melting will not occur in protected areas during freezing
conditions.
Aitemate 3 - Advantages Installation of a reinforced concrete pipe will provide
minimal interruption to rail traffic.
Storm drainaae can be incorporated in the concrete floor as
it is poured in the pipe.
Altemate 3 - Disadvantages: To construct the reinforced concrete pipe there must be
additional earth cover between the top of the pipe and the
bottom of railroad tie_ This will lower the floor of the
subway and require a deeper pump station pit and longer
. ramps. Maintenance of the pump station and floor of the
ramps and structure, as noted in Alternate 2, also apply to
Alternate 3.
Concrete pipe of the size required to provide a 10 foot
walkway will be expensive to manufacture and ship. Pipe
manufacture's are ava.ilable in either St. Louis or Chicao,
however, shipping pipe sections of this large diameter will
require special permits. The pipe could be cast in the
Decatur area but will require special forms and controlled
curing to meet specifications.
P COTJOTQt101Z Page - 9
