Pedestrian Unde ass Feasibility Study June 17, 1997 I

East Marietta Street and East Condit Street ,
The walls of the subway will be curved, thus requiring I
electrical conduit to be exposed on the surface and lighting ,
fixtures to be mounted to the concrete walls.
As noted in Alternate 2, twenty-four hour lighting adds
additional operation and maintenance costs to this altemate_
Installing the reinforced concrete pipe is a specialty item and
requires experienced tunneling contractors.
Snow and ice removal will be a maintenance item as noted
in Alternate 2 above.
Construction of a subway will require the city to relocate an
existing water ma.in that lies near the center of the street.
Alternate 4 - Advantages: Construction of the bridge piers and the bridge over the
railroad will require flagging services. However, much of
the construction activity away from the tracks will not
require the presence of a flagman, thus saving costs.
Lighting for the area can be mounted on the bridge and
ramps or mounted on poies to improve security.
Alternate 4 - Disadvantages: The existing tracks are about five feet above the Marietta
Street"touchdown" points. The additional height required
to gain elevation over the railroad will require a long system
of spiral ramps, thus increasing the cost of the approach and
pier structures.
The bridge and structure will add an exposed maintenance
structure for the city to maintain. In addition, ice and snow
removal will be difficult and the bridge may become icy in
certain conditions.
Construction of an overpass will require the city to relocate
an existing water main that lies near the center of the street.
P COlP01'QtIO1Z Page - 10
