. � ' MUtVICIPAL SERVICES MEMORANDUM 00-22 The people I was able to talk to had less-than-glowing reports on their experiences with the Athey. Several said they will not purchase another Athey. Some talk about expensive repairs to sweepers that were relatively young (three years or less). One felt that Athey parts and service are more expensive than other similar sweepers on the market. Another said he was getting less life out of the brooms on the Athey sweeper than they got with their Elgin sweepers. This resulted in a higher cost for brooms. I do not feel that I should recommend that the City invest $263,985 in sweepers that do not have a proven track record. Therefore, I recommend that we do not purchase an Athey sweeper. Last, but not least, we need sweepers that have proven that they work well in leaf pickup. The Elgin has given us outstanding service in helping us clean streets of leaves. Since leaf pickup is going to be a key issue in the future, we feel it is important that we purchase the right equipment for this purpose.
