This section of sewer is categorized ,
as critical by City staff, because of the potential effects and cost of its replacement should it fail. '
The main sewer was constructed in about 1890, and the relief sewer was constructed about 1942.
Presently, this sewer suffers from structural decay due to hydrogen sulfide and age. This has
resulted in moderate to heavy infiltration and inflow of ground water and storm water into the
sewer system. ',
The materials of the sewer vary from brick to reinforced concrete with a short segment of ',
corrugated metal pipe. The sewer system varies in both cross sectional size and material, and is ',
about two miles long. There are three cross sectional shapes in the sewer system. It includes
elliptical shaped sewer ranging in size from 34-inches wide by 51-inches high to 42-inches wide
by 63-inches high; circular shaped sewers ranging from 36-inches to 72-inches diameter; and a I
500-foot long section of rectangular shaped culvert 11 '/2 -feet wide by 2 '/2-feet high.
The rehabilitation of this sewer was designed by City Staf£ The project was divided into
three phases, because of the variation in the sewer cross sectional shapes. The phases are
independent of each other and bidders could bid on any number of phases. The project was
advertised for bids and bids were received and opened on Thursday, February 10, 2000. The
results of the bid opening for Phase III are summarized as follows (a copy of the bid tabulation is
attached):
