. OF,pEc9
- c
v o
::
'/[LINO`'
May 25, 2000
PUBLIC WORKS MEMORANDUM
NO. 2000 - 36
MEMORANDUM TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council I
FROM: Steve Garma , ity Manager
Bruce McNab , P. E., Director of Public Works
John A. Smit , Water Production Manager
SUBJECT: DeWitt Wellfield Repairs
As City Council is aware, the DeWitt County Wellfield was used for 84 days this past winter
to supplement Lake Decatur due to drought conditions. During the use of the wellfield, two of
the eight well units developed mechanical problems and were removed from service.
Layne-Western Company, an experienced well drilling and repair firm, was called in to
investigate the failure and give an estimate of the cost of repairs. The highest estimate for the
repairs is $32,800. An exact cost will not be known until the pumps are removed from the wells,
which involves heavy-duty equipment and experienced well-repair personnel. After the pumps
are removed, City staff and Layne-Western personnel will inspect the pumps to determine
possible reasons for the failure and the costs of repairs. The cost of the repairs minus a $5,000
deductible may be reimbursed by the City's boiler and machinery insurance company.
Due to the predicted drought this summer and the critical nature of this equipment, staff is
recommending that Council approve the attached resolution and allow staff to authorize the
repairs to begin as soon as possible. Staff will be available at the Council meeting to answer any
questions.
attach. 2 ,
