S. Business 51) found that in satisfying current City fire code requirements an
unacceptable level of service results in the City's water distribution system in this area. The
proposed development is on the west side of North Main Street immediately south of Tater's.
The first of two planned buildings at this location is currently under construction.
The location is currently served by a six-inch water inain that is effectively a "dead-end"
main connected to the six-inch water main on the east side of Main Street. The distribution
system satisfies normal water demand and pressures. However, fire flow demand on the system
would cause the water pressure to drop below the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency
Standard (IEPA) 20 pounds per square inch (psi) and would require the City to issue a boil order.
It was determined by City staff that the best solution was to install a new water main along the
west side of Main Street beginning at Pershing Road and extending south about 1,300 feet. The
new main would replace the six-inch main on the west side of Main Street and connect to the
main on the east side of Main Street to improve service reliability in the event of a break in the
main or the need to shut it down for some reason.
City staff has completed the design of the new 12-inch water main extension and obtained
the necessary permit from the Illinois Department of Transportation for the installation of the
new water main. It is important that the new water main be installed and operational in a timely
