ABSTRACT <br /> The City of Decatur began its residential curbside recycling program in July, 1991. The program <br /> involved curbside collection and disposal of recyclables, by a contractor, from residential units, <br /> single family dwellings up to, and including, sixpleYes. Due to the success of Decatur's recycling <br /> program, the City seeks �2�,000 to expand its recycling efforts. Grant funds will insure the <br /> provision of recycling services to a portion of the population in Decatur that is not cunently being <br /> served. <br /> Goals and Objectives <br /> 1. To erpand the recycling pro�ram in the City of Decatur. <br /> 2. To reduce the amount of waste disposed of in Central Iliinois landfills <br /> 3. To introduce recyciin�to a larger sector of the population of Decatur, one that does not <br /> cunently have recycling services. <br /> 4. To educate and inc:ease awareness of recycling as a�means of waste reduction, resource <br /> preservation, and ener�y conservation. <br /> Project Plan Summary <br /> DCCA fundine will be used to provide recyciina collection, processing, and disposal from 1,600 <br /> resideatiai units in apartment complexes and condominiums in the Ciry of Decatur. Suburban <br /> Disposal and Recycling has agreed to provide recycling services, processing, and disposal. The <br /> proposed program includes the purchase of large size recycling containers with several <br /> compartments (for the different recyclables), that wiil be located in � apartment compleYes. <br /> Containers will be placed in a central location in the site of each complex. Residents will place <br /> their recyclabies in the containers for subsequent collection bv the recycling contractor. Funding <br /> wiil aiso be used to iniorm residents of the proQram, how to use it appropriately, and to increase <br /> their awareness of the importance of recycling ror a sustainadle :ivelihood. <br />
