The travel demand forecasting process (modeling) is one of the key components of urban
transportation planing. The model is used to project future traffic volumes and can be used for the
basis for determining the need for new road capacity, transit service changes and changes in land use
policies and patterns.
Modeling is important because transportation plans and investments are based upon the model's
predictions for the future travel. Computerized transportation models are typically developed and
used to forecast transportation needs associated with future economic growth,or changes in land use.
Models provide a means to "test" land use growth scenarios relative to projected transportation
infrastructure needs. They are used to estimate the number of trips that will be generated by a land
use growth scenario on a given transportation system at some future date. These estimates can be
used as the basis for transportation plans and major investment analysis, environmental impact
statements and for setting transportation investments priorities. In short, a transportation model is
basically a series of mathematical equations which represent the choices made when people travel.
URBAN/SYS is a set of transportation planning computer programs which include TRANPLAN,
TPMENU,and 1vIS. This softwaxe package is generally referred to as TRANPLAN. TRANPLAN
incorporated a full range of models to support the four-step transportation model structure: trip
generation, irip distribution, mode choice, and trip assignment.
Staff recommends approval of the resolution.
Attachments: 1.
