E., City Engineer ;o�,� � <br /> SUBJECT: Milling And Rehabilitation <br /> City Project 9908 <br /> The City's annual programs for contracted street conventional resurfacing and the contracted <br /> milling and rehabilitation are combined into one project. This was done for the first time last <br /> year on a trial basis to determine the impact on City staffls time and what cost savings could be <br /> achieved by having a larger project. It was found that some savings was realized on asphalt <br /> prices and the decision was made to continue the practice of combining the two projects into a <br /> single project. Savings in staff time was largely in the area of contract administration and was <br /> the result of having only one contract to manage'along with a corresponding savings associated <br /> with paperwork. <br /> The conventional resurfacing involves overlaying an existing street surface with a layer of <br /> hot bituminous concrete. The milling and rehabilitation involves removing one to three inches of <br /> the existing street surface by milling and then placing a new hot bituminous concrete surface <br /> over the milled area. The purpose of these programs is to restore the useful life to a pavement in <br /> advance of its deteriorating to a condition that would require its complete reconstruction. An <br /> additional benefit of the program is that the rideability of the street is improved for users. This , <br /> year's program will include approximately 13.5 centerline miles of streets throughout the City. A <br /> listing of the streets in this year's program is attached. <br /> This year's project also includes overlay work for Macon County that is being done through <br /> a cooperative arrangement between the City and County. This work is paid for by Macon County <br /> using its MFT funds and is similar to the arrangement between the City and County for the past <br /> several years. <br /> I <br />
