O DFc'a
- C
V 70
'[LINOS I
June 8, 1998
PUBLIC WORKS MEMORANDUM
NO. 98 - 37
MEMORANDUM TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: James L. Williams, Jr., City Manager
Bruce A. McNabb, P.E., Director of Public Works
Matthew C. Newell, P.E., Traffic Engineer yylC
SUBJECT: Contract for Surveying Services
 for Traffic Signal Improvement Projects
City Project 9809
An item on the agenda for the City Council Meeting to be held on June 15, 1998, is a
contract with Homer L. Chastain & Associates to provide surveying services at a cost to the City
of$8,810. The surveying information provided through this contract will be used by City staff in
the engineering design of the traffic signal improvement projects scheduled for Fiscal Year
1998-99.
Timely surveying services are a crucial part of an engineering design. The Engineering
Division of the Public Works Department is not able to provide these services due to the demands
currently placed upon them by other projects. It is imperative that the surveying for this year's
traffic signal work be completed within the next month to allow the project to be substantially
completed prior to winter. Since a significant portion of this year's signal work will be in the
downtown area, the early completion of the surveyinwork is critical to minimizing the disruption
to the public.
In early May, the City sent requests to those firms within the Decatur area that had the
capability to provide the required services. Two responses were received. City staff has reviewed
the information provided by each firm and recommends that the contract for these services be
awarded to Homer L. Chastain& Associates.
