LEGAL DEPARTMENT MEMORANDUM
No. 97-33
November 24, 1997
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
FROM: James L. Williams, Jr., City Manager
John W. Couter, Corporation Counsel
RE: Tax Exemption for Macon County Historical Society
The Macon County Historical Society has applied to the Illinois Department of Revenue for tax
exempt status for its museum complex located on North Fork Road. The Department has informed the
Society that such status requires documentation that all taxing districts have adopted a resolution finding
that the Society is a charitable organization using the property exclusively for charitable purposes. The
Society has furnished the City a letter stating that it does use the property exclusively for charitable
purposes. Accordingly, a resolution has been prepared for Council approval finding the museum
complex to be used as required by the Department.
Staff recommends adoption of the resolution submitted herewith.
JWC:ss
cc: Wendy L. Morthland
John T. Robinson
