McNabb,Director of Public Works
Stephen P. Swanson, City Engineer
SUBJECT: Sidewalk Curb Ramps for ADA
City Project 9727
The City's annual sidewalk curb ramp program involves the installation of wheelchair
accessible ramps to comply with the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). An annual
program was set up to address the budgetary problem of installing all the ramps needed
throughout the City. In addition, the annual program has enabled the City to undertake this
program in a systematic approach and coordinate this work with other projects. This avoids the
situation of having to remove and replace newly constructed improvements.
Ramps are constructed at locations where the eusting curb prohibits access to the City's I
sidewalk system by wheelchair users. The work consists of removing existing curb and sidewalk
and constructing a concrete ramp to required specifications. Locations for each year's program
are typically selected from paving projects from previous years. This is done to minimize having
to make grade adjustments between ramps and the street's final pavement overlay. In addition,
some locations are selected as the result of citizen inquiries. This year's program includes ramp
installation at 221ocations in the City.
The project was prepared by the Engineering Division. Bids were received and opened on
Thursday, July 10, 1997. The results (copy of the bid tabulation is attached) of the letting are as
follows:
