maps, the site was occupied by a variety of small and relatively large businesses, as well <br /> as dwelling units. On-site businesses included a barber, a grocer, a blacksmith, boarding <br /> houses, a livestock feed mill and stable, liquor sales, a painting and woodworking shop, a <br /> farm equipment manufacturer, a bottling works, a chemistry laboratory, a lumber yard, a <br /> moving and storage company, and a school, among others. , <br /> Other on-site businesses that existed at various times, according to accessed city <br /> directories, included tent and awning sales, furniture sales, a blue print shop, chemical <br /> manufacturing, restaurants, mattress manufacturing, beer bottling, farm implement sales, <br /> food wholesaling, and electrical contracting. <br /> Aerial photograplis for the area of the subject site, taken in 1950 and 1966 were obtained <br /> and reviewed. While these photographs revealed general topographic and land use features <br /> consistent with the other accessed historical information sources, the scale was too small <br /> to distinguish detailed features on the subject-site. <br /> Both the city directory listings and the personal interviews subsequently outlined, helped <br /> confirm that various small businesses existed on the subject site up until 1968, when the <br /> existing Sears store was constructed. Former on-site businesses with potential <br /> environmental significance include a chemistry laboratory on Franklin Street, a lumber yard <br /> where coal was likely sold on Main Street, a chemical manufacturer on Main Street, a <br /> painting and woodworking shop at Franklin and Prairie Streets, and a gasoline service <br />� station at Prairie Street and Martin Luther King Drive. Former off-site operations with some <br /> potential for adversely affecting the site, include a coal mine to the east and a coal <br />� gasification plant to the south. <br />� REGULATORY AGENCY RECORDS REVIEW <br />� A review was made of the following current State of Illinois and Federal agency listings, <br /> and summarized in a comprehensive report by Environmental Data Resources, Inc., of <br />� Southport, Connecticut. This review assists in identifying potential contamination sources, ' <br /> both on-site and from properties within a specified radius of the subject site. Different radii <br /> were applied to the various types of listings, in accordance with tlie American Society for � <br />� Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard for environmental site assessments.
