_ •
',OF F' DECATUR, ILLINOIS
v ; il

Lake Shore Drive Relocation Study
'/(lIMO\Y
LAKE SHORE DRIVE RELOCATION STUDY
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Previous Studies
The City has performed previous studies on how to maximize the benefits of Lake Decatur to the
community. The Lake Shore Drive Relocation Study provides follow up to general recommendations
by a previous study, suggesting that relocation of a segment of Lake Shore Drive adjacent to Mueller
Park, could possibly open additional lake shore property to other development purposes,in lieu of
highway use. A previous study identified four liabilities of Lake Shore Drive;
• Freeway-like interchange at U.S.51 and Lake Shore Drive
• Heavy traffic on Lake Shore Drive, including trucks
• Lack of sidewalks on Lake Shore Drive
• Barrier effect of Lake Shore Drive
Relocation Study Objectives
Based on the desire to eliminate or mitigate these liabilities, five objectives were identified for the
relocation of Lake Shore Drive:
• Remove the U.S. 51 and Lake Shore Drive interchange
• Reduce total traffic demand on Lake Shore Drive
• Remove truck trafEic from Lake Shore Drive
• Relocate Lake Shore Drive away from the shore line adjacent to Mueller Park
• Provide a pedestrian and bicycle link between Lincoln Pazk,Mueller Park and Chandler
Park
Alternative Development
Ten alternatives were explored which had potential to meet some or all of the project objectives.
These alternatives included:
• Altemative A-No change in function of Lake Shore Drive
• Alternative B-Redesignation of Illinois Route 105 from Lake Shore Drive to Eldorado
• Altemative C-Redesignation of Illinois Route 105 from Lake Shore Drive to Wood (or
Cantrell)
• Alternative D-Cul-de-sac of Lake Shore Drive
• Alternative E -Minor realignment of Lake Shore Drive
• Alternative F-Realignment of Lake Shore Drive onto Martin Luther King jr. Drive
• Alternative G-Lake Shore Drive realigned to Cleveland Avenue
• Altemative H - Lake Shore Drive realigned to Cleveland Avenue and Marion Street
(make one way streets)
• Altemative I-Lake Shore Drive realigned and Route 105 redesignated to Martin Luther
King Jr. Drive(south connection)
• Alternative J-Lake Shore Drive realigned and Route 105 redesignated to Martin Luther
King Jr. Drive(north connection)
Bucher, Willis&Ratliff-1
Y\foq\W1CtllptlS\OICAItilA.T1 .
