v
f
sections are considered structurally adequate, major deficiencies
being leaking joints and hairline cracks throughout. Some minimal
joint and crack repair should be provided. The remainder of this
section of sewer warrants extensive rehabilitation including struc-
tural linings, provision of shaped inverts to confine low flows,
repair of substantial voids and similar work. Areas of most crit-
ical needed repairs include (aj the transition section immediately
downstream from the box sewer; (b) the brick arch beneath Jackson
st. ; and (c) the existing gunite repair section under Main St.
extended.
We note the 1966 recommendation that a new 54-inch outfall
sewer be constructed from Jackson St. to the ICG Railroad. This
appears to be an attractive alternate to rehabilitation of the
existing facilities. There is, however, a substantial cost dif-
ferential between provision of a new facility versus rehabilitation
of the existing outfall. It must be noted that building constr.uc-
tion has extended over the existing sewer alignment. Any replace-
ment of this sewer would most likely be directed along Cantrell
Street, continuing westerly beyond Franklin Street to a point of
discharge. We also believe that if a new sewer is constructed it
should not terminate at the ICG Railroad as suggested in the 1966
Report, but should continue beneath the Railroad to its present
point of termination. With this in mind we have prepared alternate
estimate of cost for consideration, together with the following
summation of relative merits of the two system as follows:
87023A 8-15
24 of 29
