Excerpt from Plan Commission Minutes of March 4 , 1993
Cal. No. 93-17 Petition of DAVID A. CLARK, DIRECTOR OF
CONSUNITY DEVELOPMENT, for a special use
permit to allow the construction and
operation of a fire station as a government
building on premises generally located in
the 1300-1400 block of North Water Street and
North Main Street.
Mr. George Weaver was present and spoke for the petition stating
that the Commission had received a site plan for the proposed
construction of Firestation #1 which would be relocated from
downtown to north of Grand Avenue. Mr. Weaver stated that the
City had undertaken a comprehensive planning exercise regarding
site locations, run times, and hazards which were run through a
computer program to determine service to the existing and growing
community.
Mr. Weaver stated that there is parking on the northwest side for
employees and the southwest for visitors. In addition, the
east-west driveway is for emergency vehicles which will leave
northbound and return to the station southbound on 51. The
special use provision permits a firestation. There are varied
existing zoning patterns in the area. The staff of Public Works,
Safety Services and Community Development recommend approval of
the petition.
Mr. Thomas questioned if there had been any reaction to the
published location and plan. Mr. Weaver stated that throughout
the process staff had met with nearby property owners who were
involved with the development of the site plan.
Discussions were also held with nearby businesses regarding
access and parking.
It was moved and seconded (Thomas/Brinkoetter) and unanimously
approved that Cal. No. 93-17 be forwarded to City Council for
approval.
