EXCERPTS FROM
- TRAFFIC & PARKING COMMITTEE MEETING
NOVEMBER 18, 1992
ITEM #1 - Request for stop or yield signs at Calhoun Street and
Main Street.
Swartz opened the floor to citizen comments.
Mr. Hilliard began by saying that someone from the City
came out and put traffic counters in the area, but the area has
a lot of other neighborhood problems which keep getting worse.
Schiller did not notice a problem with speeding in the area
when he was there. He is in favor of controlling the northbound
and southbound traffic, but does not feel it is necessary for
the east/west traffic.
Moss agrees with Schiller.
Curlin stated that, based on the accident history, he would
agree with staff recommendation for yield signs.
Newell stated yield signs would not necessarily be the
solution. He would like to put them up and make an evaluation
at a later time. It is a fairly heavily traveled street. It
would not be out of the question that stop signs in one direc-
tion might be appropriate in the future.
Schiller asks if it would be possible to evaluate the
traffic count and the average spee3 after a month.
Bauer did not notice traffic moving at excessive speeds,
nor did he rrotice a lot of traffic. He did notice a tree on the '
northeast corner of the intersection which blocks the view.
Barthelemy agrees with Mr. Hilliard that there are a lot of
problems in the neighborhood. He commented that a yield sign is
harder to enforce than a stop sign. He would be in favor of
stop signs on Calhoun for north/south traffic.
