The sales tax abatement for the Decatur
Enterprise Zone will terminate on June 30 , 1986 . The results of
this hearing will go to the Decatur City Council and then to the
Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs for their
final approval before it is officially enacted.
Mr. Jerry Peck, Sims Lumber Company, stated they are very much in
favor of the Enterprise Zone and would hate to see it dropped.
Mr. Peck stated Sims Lumber did have some problems when it first
started, but those problems have been straightened out . Of the
construction jobs completed in Decatur, Mr. Peck felt that
approximately 80% would have been done with or without the
Enterprise Zone. The sales tax abatement does give Decatur an
advantage, in that it gives an incentive to buy products in
Decatur instead of in Springfield.
Mr. Clark explained that there will be a time gap from the time
the sales tax abatement ends until it begins again . It will
terminate on June 30 , 1986 , and will not begin again until it is
formally approved by the state .
Mr. Menzies stated this will go before the Decatur City Council
on June 30, 1986 .
Mr. Peck expressed concern about what will happen if a job was
started befor the abatement ended, but will not be completed
until after June 30th.
Ms . Lori Lehman , Sims Lumber Company, stated from the building
permits issued in the past two years , Sims Lumber has had over ,
$4 million in sales for the Enterprise Zone .
