P Guidepost
Roadway Conditions
Overall, crashes due to roadway defects were a
small portion of the crashes studied. Some
areas identified still had a consistent pattern of
crashes due to the roadway conditions. The
public identified worn surfaces and potholes at
multiple locations and the project team - `'
confirmed this with crash statistics. Worn
surfaces can be especially dangerous on curves
and wet roadways. A study performed by the
Florida Department of Transportation" showed
that high friction surfaces reduced the crash -;:
rate on tight curves by 32%and the wet-weather ` r
crash rate by 75% on average. These areas can
be improved via regular maintenance and a . 6 ; .R'
program dedicated to filling the potholes in, V •
especially in late winter and early spring when
the freeze thaw cycles increase the number of
potholes. High Friction Surface Treatment in Florida
Creating a website like the Social Pinpoint map
would enable the public to continuously report roadway defects, facilitating timely planning and maintenance. Small
roadway issues can be difficult for the City to identify on its own, but public input can help quickly pinpoint these
problems. Prompt maintenance based on community reports can prevent future crashes caused by roadway defects.
Safety Guidelines
The United States Department of Transportation provides traffic calming and safety guidelines and case studies that
the project team used to develop the following guidelines. Several cities' guidelines were studied and compared to
develop the criteria below. Some of these cities include Wauwatosa, Wisconsin12, Sunnyvale, California'', New York
City, New York14, Seattle, Washington15, and Portland, Maine16. The thresholds were adjusted to account for
differences in population and overall crashes.
11 High Friction Surface Treatment Guidelines Project Selection,Materials, and Construction.
