• I Guidepost
In the future there will be continued public identification of traffic safety issues. Guidelines must be put in place to
adequately identify where responses are needed.
The continued use of the social pinpoint map, the implementation of a safety request form will allow the public to
request improvements. Once an area is selected for improvements, the city may request a petition from a
representative number of residents in the area to verify that there is a widespread concern. After the petition is
received and accepted, data collection will begin. Data related to the concern should be collected, such as speed data
for speed concerns or angle crash data for traffic signal concerns. Thresholds will be assigned to concerns as seen
in and if the data collected exceeds the thresholds, then possible solutions will be suggested. Solutions that
do not involve the use of physical controls or impediments on the roadway will be considered first. These include
traffic enforcement by the police department, the addition or renovation/addition of the traffic signing and pavement
markings in the area, and/or temporary demonstrations of future modifications. For example, using bollards or hay
bales to create curb extensions could provide data showing that permanent modifications will be successful. If one
or more of these solutions are implemented the City will evaluate the intersection after three to six months to see if
the safety measure was successful. If the results of the data are under the threshold, then the traffic calming or safety
process will end at this point. If the location continues to exceed the thresholds, then additional traffic calming and/or
safety methods that involve physical controls and impediments will be analyzed.
Examples of these include:
• Speed Humps
• Raised Crossings
• Roundabouts
• Curb Extensions, lane narrowing, or chicanes
• Median Islands
• Mid-Block Raised Medians
• One Way Streets
kapur Page 43 of 81
all in
