1. Critical Large Diameter Sewer Rehabilitation.
2. Sanitary Sewer Overflows Due to Inflow and Infiltration.
3. System Operation and Maintenance
4. Small Diameter Sewer Rehabilitation
The 2011 Annual Sanitary Sewer Inspection Program addresses all sanitary sewer priorities.
Televising is needed to find deteriorated sanitary sewers for large and small diameter sewer
rehabilitation. Televising also assists with operation and maintenance by finding areas that need to
be cleaned because of roots and other debris. All of the above mentioned televising assists in inflow
and infiltration reduction efforts.
Pipeline Inspection Services are Necessary to City's Sewer Maintenance Program
Pipeline inspection services have proven invaluable in locating problems and answering questions
that arise in the normal maintenance of the City's sewers along with ongoing condition assessment.
Major work items are detailed below:
1. Sewer Line Inspections: This work is performed through the insertion of a camera that is driven
or pulled through sewer lines in order to determine the condition of the line. This information
assists staff in preparing improvement projects or identifying maintenance needs.
2. Manhole Inspections: Manholes are often a weak link in the sewer system in that they are direct
access points to the sewer system. Many manholes are located on streets and are subject to traffic
loads and heavy storm water inflow. These forces often have a significant effect on the structural
integrity of a manhole and the sewer system in general. A significant step in improving the
overall reliability of the City's sewer system and decrease storm water inflow is to gain
information on the condition of the City's manholes and improve them.
3. Smoke Testing: This work involves forcing smoke through a sewer line to determine if there are
holes in the line that allow storm water to flow into the line causing sewer overflows. Smoke
testing can be used to identify illegal sewer connections and damaged pipe.
4. Manhole Rehabilitation: A contract unit price is provided to allow the contractor to repair
damaged manholes without going to the expense to dig it out and replace them. If manhole
deterioration is caught early enough, a significant amount of money is saved by lining to restore
its structural integrity.
5. Point Repairs: Point repairs involve placing a small liner to repair a specific spot of damaged
pipe without having to resort to digging the pipe up and replacing it. As with manhole
rehabilitation, if pipe damage is caught early enough, there are significant cost savings in spot
lining a damaged section of pipe as opposed to digging it up.
6. Special Studies: This work involves investigating the sewer system to find unknown connections,
unknown manholes or pipelines. Special studies have been made to identify sources of
abnormally heavy flow in sewers, locations where storm water is infiltrating into the pipe causing
overflows, or where there are incidents of heavy grease clogging the line causing sewer backups.
Page 12
