Crowe,Assistant City Manage�/ <br /> Vasudha Pinnamaraju,AICP, Environmental Planner �.�� <br /> SUBJECT: Sustainability Planning Agreement Approval <br /> SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends approval of Decatur Area Sustainability Plan <br /> Agreement. <br /> BACKGROUND: In accordance with the guidelines set forth under the American Recovery and <br /> Reinvestment Act 2009, the Department of Development Services submitted an application on June 21 <br /> 2009 for the use of$768,200 EECBG funds. DOE has announced the award on November 25 2009. The <br /> following projects were approved by DOE <br /> Pro'ect Pro osed bud et <br /> Creation of Sustainabili Plan $50,000 <br /> Ener Efficient retrofits for the Civic Center Buildin $334,100 <br /> Ex and the existin Ener Conservation Pro ram $384,100 <br /> Total $768,200 <br /> What is a sustainability plan? The community sustainability plan could potentially address the following <br /> metrics depending on the community's need. <br /> Resource conservation: Preservation of Lake Decatur, storm water and waste water management and <br /> encouraging best practices like rain gardens to improve the water table below the ground level. <br /> Ener�y: Encouraging energy efficiency and renewable energy resources like perennial grasses, solar and <br /> wind energy. <br /> Environment and public health: Reduce waste and increase recycling thus helping Decatur become a Zero <br /> waste community; Addresses the issues of redevelopment of Brownfield sites. <br /> Transportation: Increased sustainable transportation options like pedestrian and bike paths, increased use <br /> of mass transit. <br /> Economic Development: Development of green collar jobs and green workforce, resource efficiency for <br /> local businesses, business reinvestment and local food procurement policies. <br /> Open space and Landuse: Regionally appropriate vegetation, accessibility of open spaces and parks and <br /> integration of sustainability planning in the comprehensive plan. <br /> I <br />
