I <br /> West Main Street Overlay <br /> Design Guidelines <br /> Section XXV & XXVIII of Decatur's existing zoning ordinan e sets the standards for all <br /> signs and landscaping in the city. The West Main Street Overlay Design Guidelines set out <br /> additional standards and/or recommendations for signs and lands aping within the overlay <br /> district. The purpose of the overlay is to provide guidance in the u e and design of signs and <br /> landscaping to visually unify and define particular areas. The o erlay would not mandate <br /> specific signs and landscaping, rather it would provide a palette o shapes, colors, plants and <br /> materials that could be combined in various ways. In this way, signs and landscaping will show <br /> the character and tastes of individuals, while contributing to the identi y of the district where they <br /> are located. <br /> Sign Requirements <br /> 1. Supports - Since this is a historic area, sign supports shall complement the structures and <br /> be in character with the historic district. <br /> 2. Materials: Metals: Black or dark (gun <br /> metal)blue/gray <br /> Masonry: Dark red rick blend <br /> Smooth (t rra cotta) redJbrown tinted <br /> concrete/s ndstone <br /> Accent masonry: Cut limes one <br /> 3. Shapes — Both commercial and residential areas exist with n this zone. Commercial <br /> signs shall be predominately horizontal in shape with angular projections. The area near <br /> downtown is older where commercial signs were typically ery horizontal against the <br /> building just above the awning. <br /> 4. Graphics - Designated geometric shape: Square wi h rounded corners <br /> Dominant color: Bright B1 e <br /> Dark color: Dark(terr� cotta) red/brown <br /> Secondary background color: Tan or sand <br /> 5. Commercial Signs <br /> a. Freestanding Sign <br /> i. Monument Sign <br /> 1. Maximum Height: Five (5) feet <br /> 2. Maximum Area: Thirty-two (32) square feet <br /> ii. Shingle Sign <br /> 1. Maximum Height: Ten (10) feet; Six ( ) foot minimum clearance <br /> from ground to the bottom of the sign f ce <br /> 2. Maximum Area: Twelve (12) square fe t <br /> b.
