,
COUNCIL MEMORANDUM
#2006-12
DATE: October 11, 2006
TO: Honorable Mayor Osborne and City Council
FROM: Steve Ga ity Manager
Ron Neufel , irector of Finance
SUBJECT: Contribution to Boys and Girls Club of Decatur
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION:
Staff recommends approval of the attached resolution authorizing a contribution of
$20,000 to the Boys and Girls Club of Decatur. If approved, funds would be disbursed in
$10,000 increments this fiscal year and nert.
BACKGROUND•
This summer we were approached by the Boys and Girls club about providing a one-time
contribution to its capital campaign. The club has been in the city since 1972 and has
established a strong track record for serving and growing local youth, today hosting more
than 1,500 members many of which could be considered disadvantaged or at risk(see
attached letter). It is staff's opinion that the Boys and Girls Club serves a role very
similar to the Decatur Macon County Senior Center in our community in that it provides
programming and services aimed at a specific segment of our community that otherwise '
might not receive what many would consider some of the necessities of life. Additionally, '
the majority of club funding would not come from the city were this contribution to be
approved as they work to bring in a significant amount of funding and assistance from
other sources. The group is also working to solidify future maintenance funding through
the establishment of a maintenance endowment, designed to lessen the need for future
capital campaigns.
POTENTIAL OBJECTION: There are no known objectors.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: Walt Smith, Executive Director for
the Boys and Girls Club, 422-9605
STAFF REFERENCE: N/A
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: N/A
