Pipeline Inspection Services
Pipeline inspection services are crucial in identifying problems underground and answering questions
that arise in the normal maintenance of the City's sewers along with ongoing condition assessment.
Major work items are detailed below:
1. Sewer Line Inspections: This work is performed through the insertion of a motorized camera that
is driven through the sewers to determine the condition of the pipe. This information assists staff
in preparing improvement projects or identifying maintenance needs.
2. Sewer Cleanin: Sewer cleaning is the most critical component in providing and preserving full
capacity within the sewer system. The cleaning process removes all debris, grease and roots from
the sewer by use of high water pressure and cutting heads. All accumulated debris will be
vacuumed out of the sewer system. Combining cleaning with televised inspection has proven to
be very effective in assuring clean sewer lines and an optimal inspection.
3. Manhole Inspections: Manholes are often a weak link in the sewer system in that they are direct
access points from the surface to the sewer system. Many manholes are located on streets and are
subject to traffic loads and heavy storm water inflow. These forces often have a significant effect
on the structural integrity of a manhole and the sewer system in general. A major step in
improving the overall reliability of the City's sewer system, and decrease storm water inflow, is to
gain information on the manhole condition and make the necessary improvements.
4. Smoke Testin: This work involves blowing smoke through a sewer line to determine if there are
holes in the line that allow storm water to flow into the line causing sewer overflows. Smoke
testing can also be used to identify illegal sewer connections and damaged pipes.
5. Manhole Rehabilitation: A unit price is provided to repair damaged manholes without going to
the expense to replace them. If manhole deterioration is caught early enough, a significant
amount of time and money is saved by lining the manhole to restore its structural integrity.
6. Point Repairs: Point repairs involve placing a small liner to repair a specific spot of damaged
pipe without having to resort to digging the pipe up and replacing it. As with manhole
rehabilitation, if pipe damage is caught early enough, there are significant cost savings in spot
lining an isolated damaged section of pipe as opposed to digging it up or fully lining the pipe.
7. Special Studies: This work involves investigating the sewer system to find unknown connections,
unknown manholes, or pipelines. Special studies have been completed to identify sources of
abnormally heavy flow in sewers, locations where storm water is infiltrating into the pipe causing
overflows, or where there are incidents of heavy grease clogging the line causing sewer backups.
8. Rapid Response Inspections: Rapid-Response inspections are generally used to investigate
critical sewer problems such as sinkholes, blocked sewer services or mains, maintenance
problems, and some residential complaints. The ability to quickly get a camera into a line that is
experiencing a failure of some type provides maintenance staff with a large amount of
information to be used in determining the proper course of action.
Ongoing televised inspection efforts are generally focused on sewers that have not been inspected or
that need an updated inspection. Having televised inspection data on all the City's sewers will assist
staff in creating a GIS database for the City's sewer system condition assessment.
