Decatur,City of,Mound School Bodine Project#114675
Phase II Subsurface Investigation Report August 29 2003
adjusting the boring locations,Bodine utilized a systematic planning process to establish
a seven(7) feet distance between sample locations, based upon the reported size of the
UST being 550 gallons. Field adjustments for step out locations were based upon DPT
refusal and observations which appeared to indicate the UST and concrete slab may still
remain. The borings were abandoned by filling with bentonite chips to surface. In areas
where there was an asphalt surface, asphalt patch was placed in the top 6 inches of the
boring locations. Figure 1, in Attachment A, depicts the final boring locations.
During installation of the borings, Bodine made several observations which appear to
indicate the UST and concrete anchor slab may still be present.
• Boring B3 was advanced into loose sand from 0.5 feet to 6.5 feet. At 6.5 feet the
boring could no longer be advanced with significant additional force applied by the
probe. When retrieving the flights, the tip of the probe appeared to have a grey
substance around the edge.
• Boring BS was advanced approximately 2.6 feet before encountering refusal.
Additional force was applied to the probe and the probe was forced, at a slight angle
to the west, past the obstruction. Upon removal of the flights from the boring, a 1.5
inch diameter shaving of inetal was found in the probe tip. The soil which was
recovered had a dark iron oxide appearance, indicating potential contact with a buried
iron/steel object.
• Boring B8 was advanced into loose sand from 0.5 feet to approximately 4 feet. At 4
feet probe refusal was encountered and the boring could not be advanced any further.
• Boring B9 was advanced to approximately 4 feet. At 4 feet probe refusal was
encountered and the boring could not be advanced any further. The core removed I
from the probe contained brown/orange silty clay.
3.2 Data Collection:
As borings were completed, Bodine conducted field observations of the unconsolidated I!
geologic material and screened the cores with a photo-ionization detector(PID) at 6 inch
intervals. During the investigations, no readings, above background, were indicated for
any of the borings. The samples were selected from intervals which indicated the highest
potential for contamination and consistent with the sampling recommendations of the
IEPA Leaking Underground Storage Tank(LUST) Program.
Since the UST was reported to contain diesel fuel, Bodine selected the indicator
contaminates for the IEPA LUST Program, BTEX and PAHs. Soil samples for BTEX
analysis were collected first, utilizing Terracore samplers with sodium bisulfate and
methanol preservation in accordance with SW-846 Method 5035/8260. The PAH
samples were collected last and placed into nine (9) ounce laboratory certified glass
3
E3O(7lNE f"NVIFiONMEN7Al SFHVICES, INC. __ ___
