Decatur,City of,Mound School Bodine Project#114675
Phase II Subsurface Investigation Report August 29 2003
As indicated in Section 3.1,physical observations during installation of the borings
appear to indicate the UST, UST piping and/or concrete slab may still be in place. These
observations appear to be supported by the fact that the vent and fill pipes remain
adjacent to the building.
Bodine would recommend the client consider the removal of the UST as part of future
development of the property.
4.0 Sanitary Sewer Boring Location:
After the utility locates had been completed,Bodine adjusted the boring location to avoid
encountering the identified utilities. Bodine established DQOs for this project to obtain one
sample to determine if a release from the sanitary sewer system may have occurred. Bodine
selected the location at the first manhole connection outside of the facilities. The Decatur
Public School District drawings were used to follow the indicated drain lines which accepted
waste water from the shop areas and laboratory azeas inside the facility. If leaks from the
system had occurred, It would be anticipated that suspect liquids would follow the utility
corridor to the first manhole, which would have been set further below grade than the utility
trench.
The proposal indicated one boring to be advanced to a depth of approximately fifteen(15)
feet below grade. Samples were to be collected for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs),
Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds (SVOCs)and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act
(RCRA)regulated metals. The location of the boring is indicated in Attachment A, Figure 1.
4.1 Field Investigation Summary:
After completion of the 11 borings for the UST location discussed in Section 3.0, Bodine
demobilized from that location and remobilized the DPT Unit, service vehicle, personnel
and equipment to the south of Mound School for the purpose of completing subsurface
boring B 12, see Figure 1 in Attachment A.
Bodine had previously established the location based upon design drawings obtained
from the Decatur Public School District. After the utility locates were completed, Bodine
adjusted the location to insure that the boring was advanced within the backfill for the
manhole. The boring was abandoned by filling with bentonite chips to surface.
4.2 Data Collection:
As the boring was advanced, Bodine conducted field observations of the unconsolidated
geologic material and screened the core with a PID at 6 inch intervals. During the
investigation, no readings, above background, were indicated for the boring. The
samples were selected from the bottom of the backfill at the interface between the fill and
suspected native material.
5
fiOL)INE ENV/RONMENTAL 5FRVICES, INC.
