Decatur,City of,Mound School Bodine Project#114675
Phase II Subsurface Investigation Report August 29 2003 I
Since the sanitary system may have received liquids from shop and laboratory class ,
rooms, Bodine selected indicator contaminants of VOCs, SVOCs and the 8 RCRA !
metals. The soil sample for VOC analysis was collected first, utilizing Tenacore ',
samplers with sodium bisulfate and methanol preservation, SW-846 Method 5035/8260. I
Soil for the SVOC sample was collected next and placed into a 9 ounce laboratory 'i
certified glass container. Last, soil for the metals analysis was collected and placed into a I
9 ounce laboratory certified glass container. Sample containers were immediately sealed, ',
labeled and placed into a cooler containing blue ice. The sample identification number '
corresponds with the boring location, B 12, indicated on Figure L '
On July 28, 2003, the sample was relinquished to PDC Laboratories, Inc. courier under '
the Chain of Custody. The sample arrived at the laboratory and was logged into the
laboratory system on August 28, 2003. Pursuant to the Service Agreement, the
laboratory conducted the analysis of the samples for VOCs, SVOCs and 8 RCRA Metals.
Bodine received the laboratory report, with the original Chain of Custody on August 13,
2003,Attachment B.
4.3 Data Review: '
For sample B12, VOCs and SVOCs were reported by the laboratory as not detected at the ,
laboratory reporting limits, with one exception. Acetone was reported at 0.040 mg/kg ',
(dry weight). The laboratory report indicates reporting limits and concentrations for both '
dry weight and wet weight measurements. According to regulatory guidelines, sample ,
results reported as dry weight are to be used to compare to the IEPA TACO Tier 1 SROs. 'I
The laboratory reported no data qualifications in the analysis of the samples. I
The IEPA TACO Tier 1 SRO for Acetone is 16 mg/kg,based upon the soil component of
the groundwater ingestion exposure route for Class I and Class II groundwater. The
reported concentration of Acetone was below the IEPA TACO Tier 1 SROs for the
residential, commerciaUindustrial and construction worker pathways. Therefore, the
reported concentration of Acetone is below the applicable IEPA TACO Tier 1 SROs. It
should be noted that Acetone is also considered a common laboratory contaminant and
the reported concentration may be considered a artifact of laboratory operation.
The metals analysis conducted for the 8 RCRA metals indicated Barium, Chromium, and
Lead as detected and reported at concentrations above the laboratory reporting limits.
Bodine compared the reported concentrations for each analyte to the IEPA, 35 IAC 742,
Table G: Concentrations of Inorganic Chemicals in Background Soils. The concentration
reported for Lead(13 mg/kg) is below the published background values. Inorganic
constituents not detected and detected below IEPA published background values
(Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead, Selenium and Silver) are not required to be further evaluated.
6
EtUCINF ENVIRONMEN7AL. 5FRVICES, INC. _.e _____.__ _ .
