Decatur,City of,Mound School Bodine Project#114675
Phase II Subsurface Investigation Report August 29 2003
During the installation of borings, Bodine encountered several delays associated with the
Decatur Public School District's repair and maintenance of the Local Area Network System.
As a result, the sub-surface investigation had to be conducted over several days to coordinate
with the individuals performing the repairs.
5.1 Field Investigation Summary:
On July 28, 2003, Bodine mobilized service vehicle, personnel and equipment to the site
for the purpose of completing subsurface investigations inside of the Mound School.
Bodine had previously established locations based upon design drawings obtained from
the Decatur Public School District, Attachment A. In addition to review of facility
drawings, Bodine obtained access to the crawl space area to determine if utilities may be
impacted by the installation of borings. Bodine could not identify any subgrade utilities
running through the proposed boring locations.
Bodine utilized a wet-cutting six inch concrete drill to penetrate the concrete slab floors
for each location. After reaching the base of the concrete, the plug was removed and 6-
mil polyethylene was secured to the floor to avoid impacts to interior surfaces.
Bodine utilized an electric powered hammer drill and several flights of two inch stainless
steel augers to advance borings inside Mound School. This equipment was selected to
overcome site access limitations since this equipment can be operated within the vertical,
horizontal and sma11 area limitations.
5.2 Data Collection:
As borings were completed, Bodine conducted field observations of the unconsolidated
geologic material and screened the cores with a PID at 6 inch intervals. During the
investigation,no readings above background were indicated for any of the borings. The
samples were selected from intervals which indicated the highest potential for
contamination and consistent with the recommendations of the IEPA LUST Program.
Since the UST was reported to contain fuel oil, Bodine selected the indicator
contaminates for the IEPA LUST Program, BTEX and PAHs. Soil samples for BTEX
analysis were collected first, utilizing Terracore samplers with sodium bisulfate and
methanol preservation, SW-846 Method 5035/8260. The PAH samples were collected
last and placed into 9 ounce laboratory certified glass containers. Sample containers
were immediately sealed, labeled and placed into a cooler containing blue ice. Sample
identification numbers correspond directly to the boring locations indicated on Figure 1.
8
BODINE ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES, INC.
