pumping test.
Subtask 3.2: Prepare maps, logs, and data for field effort.
Subtask 3.3: Verify existence and accuracy of well information. Record
location, well use, static water level, depth, accessibility, pump setting,
average pumpage, and well owner/land owner.
Task 4: Determine locations for observation wells. Two criteria will be used
for selecting drill sites, needs for geologic information and the need for water
level data during the pumping test. The locations will be selected to optimize
these needed information.
Task 5: Test hole drilling. Seven to nine test holes will be drilled and completed
as observation wells. Geologic descriptions of the materials will be completed
and samples will be collected of representative cuttings. A 2-inch PVC
observation well will be installed into each borehole at a specific depth to target
information in a specific aquifer. The wells will be drilled using the ISWS drill
rig and operator.
Task 6: Develop the observation wells. Because the drilling method allow for
viscous fluids to penetrate the aquifer around the borehole, each well will be
pumped until clear of these materials.
Task 7: Install water level measuring devices in observation wells. Recording
water level devices will be placed at several of the observation wells. These
recorders will be started as soon as they are installed to begin collecting
background water level data to identify potential flow trends relevant to the
analysis of the pumping test results.
Task 8: Conduct a step test of Decatur #2. A 3-4 hour step test will be run on
the production well. Rates will be changed at 30 minute intervals, increasing
each step until the well is pumping its maximum rate. The well will be shut
down after the test and allowed to recover for 1-2 days. The information
gathered during the test will be analyzed to determine the well loss coefficient, ',
which can be used to determine the drawdown caused by the well (versus the '
drawdown due to the hydraulic properties of the aquifer). This testing will
provide an opportunity to test the equipment in use as well as determine if any I
changes are needed prior to running the 30-day test.
Task 9: Conduct the 30-day aquifer test. Pump Decatur #2 at a specified rate
for 30 days. After 30 days of pumping, the well will be shut off and the aquifer
recovery will be measured in the observation wells. If any well interference
problems should occur during the test with a private well, the ISWS will measure
the water level in the affected well and then will determine if the pumping test is
causing an effect. We do not anticipate any problems unless a drought has
occurred prior to the test, in which case the test could be delayed. If a problem
does occur, the City of Decatur and the MVWA will assist the ISWS in resolving
the conflict for the duration of the test. If no solution is feasible, then the test
will be aborted.
Task 10: Download and compile data. All of the information will be
downloaded onto computer and the individual measurements by ISWS staff will
