Krieg , ssistant City Manager <br /> Steve Van S enhuyse,AICP,Plannin anager <br /> Kathy J.M� ler,AICP,Planner K�y�,� <br /> SUBJECT: Naming of West Center Street Bridge--Stevens Bridge <br /> SLTMMARY RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends approval of the resolution authorizing the <br /> naming of Stevens Bridge. The Historical and Architectural Sites Commission reviewed the <br /> request at the October 17 meeting and recommended approval unanimously. The meeting <br /> minutes are attached. <br /> BACKGROLTND: The Decatur Local History Club is interested in marking three significant sites <br /> recognized for early settlements in Macon County. The sites are: Lorton's Trading Post (1816-1826) <br /> located near the southeast corner of Caleb and Dunbar Roads in Whitmore Township; the James Ward ' <br /> Settlement (late 1820's) located near the Mt. Gilead Cemetery at the southeast corner of South Franklin <br /> Street Road and Mt Gilead Road; and the Steven's Settlement (1821) located near Sanders Park at the I <br /> northeast corner of West Center and Hunt Streets. It is planned that these locations will be marked by I, <br /> bronze plaques with funds contributed from the Historical and Architectural Sites Commission and the �I <br /> Decatur Park District. � <br /> The Local History Club is also requesting that the bridge located in the middle of the Stevens settlement <br /> be named the Stevens Bridge. The Bridge will be marked with brown landmark signs produced by <br /> Municipal Services. <br /> POTENTIAL OBJECTIONS: There are no lrnown objectors to the request. <br /> INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: The Historical and Architectural Sites Commission reviewed the <br /> request and found the request to be appropriate. <br /> STAFF REFERENCES: If Council members have questions they may contact Kathy Miller at 424-2786 <br /> or at kjmiller@decaturnet.org. <br /> BUDGET/TIME IMPLICATIONS: The cost to install the signs is approximately$300. <br />
