 Y
Page 2 I!
Engineering staff opposes the Traffic and Parking Commission's recommendation as a misuse of ',
stop signs or similar traffic control devices. In the opinion of Engineering staff, the Commission I
is seeking to control vehicular speeds in the Chat Drive area by placing stop signs at two cross
streets as a concession to resident demands. Through the review material distributed to the
Commission and copied to the Council, it was shown that speeding is not a problem at the
subject intersections. Most speeding in the area is likely caused by area residents. The cavalier
use of stop signs as a "cure all" for safety problems perceived by residents and used as a "quick
fix" by the Traffic and Parking Commission, only serves to reduce respect for legitimate traffic
control while leaving any genuine neighborhood problems unresolved. Staff does not believe it
to be in the best interest of the City to be indiscriminate in the use of traffic control on the City
streets.
POTENTIAL OBJECTION:
No formal objections have been raised, however, it is likely that Engineering and Infrastructure
staffs recommendations are not shared by the majority of the Traffic and Parking Commission or
area residents.
INPUT FROM OTHER SOURCES: Traffic and Parking Commission
STAFF REFERENCE: Matt Newell and Bill Ratekin, City Engineering(424-2747)
The City Engineer, Matt Newell, will be in attendance at the City Council meeting to answer any
questions of the Council on this item.
BUDGET/TIME IMPLICATIONS:
Budgetary impacts are approximately$400 for the installation of signs. If stop sign placement is
authorized by the City Council, this work will be completed as soon as possible.
attach: 5
cc: John Smith
Traffic and Parking Commission
