Mayor and City Council
November 14, 1995
Page Two
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design principles were discussed with the neighbor-
hood group. Consistent with CPTED principles, it was determined that the following issues
would be measures of success for Macon Place: a positive impact on crime, a feeling of owner-
ship by residents in the neighborhood, an increased sense of safety, and overall improved neigh-
borhood livability and quality of life.
City staff has received opposition from one person regazding the proposed closure of the alley
south of Macon Street at Monroe. There is a parking area behind the apartment building at 340
S. Monroe. The owner says his tenants would be affected. However, after studying other op-
tions to close the alley, staff maintains its recommendation, based on traffic and crime patterns,
to close the alley at Monroe. The neighborhood organization is aware of the opposition and con-
tinues to support staff s position.
The Traffic and Parking Commission also supports the placement of temporary barriers in the
Macon Place neighborhood. A copy of the minutes are attached.
Staff will be present to answer any questions.
enc.
