Pedestrian Urderpass Feasibility Study June 17, 1997
East Marietta Street and East Condit Street
EIevating the sidewaik and installing the protective fence
will create a " confined space" between the fence and the
south retaining wall that wil present space problems
between pedestflans and bicycles that might use the walk.
This restriction may cause pedestrians to seek alternate
routes.
Alternate SB will also require the installation of fencing
north of Condit Street as noted in Alternate SA to prevent
pedestrians from crossing the railroad.
Alternate SC-Advantages Raising the south sidewalk and constructi.ng it ten feet wide
will meet both ADA criteria and bicycle width criteria. This
will totally separate the two from vehicular traffic.
Additional lighting and repairs to the bridge joints, as noted
in SA, wiil also apply to this alternate.
Alternate SC-Disadvantages: idening of the sidewalk will require removal of the north
sidewalk and shifting the centeriine of the street to the
north. This will require a transition in driving lanes at both
entrances to the underpass. The transition would require
additional striping and sinage warning motorists.
Elimination of the north sidewalk will require new cross
watks at Clinton Street and Calhoun Street directing
pedestrians to cross to the south side for passage throuh
the underpass. Additional traffic signs may be warranted to
warn motorists of the cross walks.
• wdening the south sidewalk and movinthe street to the
north will require reconstruction of the storm drainage
system located in the low point of the underpass. It will
also require reconstruction of the street surface between
Clinton Street and Calhoun Street for roadway transitions.
Funding
Determination of funding sources for this project is not part of this report.
P COT701'LZl'lOfZ PaDe - IZ
