For this reason, once an <br /> incident has been confumed, atl jurisdicrions that might be affected will <br /> be notified and kept informed of the evolving situation. <br /> 11. Biological events may not be recognized for days unril widespread <br /> symptoms occur and are recognized by the hospitaUpublic health system. <br /> III. Planning Factors <br /> A. Geogxaphy <br /> l. Macon County, Illinois is an agricultural county with a large, centrally- <br /> located industry base and has a variety of communities dispersed <br /> throughout the azea. The topography is generally flat to gently rolling. <br /> Temperature extremes are from—22 degrees F in the winter to 106 <br /> degees F in the summer,with averages of 25 degrees in the winter and <br /> 71 degees in the sununer. The popularion is 117,206(1990 Census), <br /> with the county seat in Decatur. The county is geographically situated in <br /> Central Illinois with Sangamon County to the west, Dewitt and Logan <br /> Counties to the north,Piatt County to the east, and Shelby, Moultrie, and <br /> Christian Counties to the South. There are 12 villages and ciries, 17 <br /> townships range in population from650 upwards to 84,000. The 572 <br /> square miles of land is at an average altitude of 615 feet with the <br /> • Sangamon River flowing through the county from east to west. <br /> B. Climate <br /> The climate of Macon County is generally temperate. All four seasons are <br /> experienced,with teinperature extremes during the year from below zero in the <br /> winter to highs in the 90's to over 100 in the suxruner. The county is ranked si�cth <br /> in the state with documented tornado touchdowns since records have been kept. <br /> The county is subject to rainfall averaging 37 inches per year but has experienced <br /> droughts, the most severe being in 1988. Winter storms occur, including ice <br /> storms, heavy snows,whiteouts,periods of extreme cold, and blizzards, causing <br /> hazazdous road conditions. There is an average of 26 inches of snowfall each <br /> year. Wind is from the southwest 55%of the time. During the winter inonths,the <br /> wind ma.inly blows from the northwest. <br /> C. Water Supplies <br /> Lake Decatur supplies water for Decatur and Mt. Zion. The smaller incorporated <br /> communities have wells with water towers holding their daily water supply. Most <br /> non-incorporated azeas obtain water from private wells.
