DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT SERVICES
HUMAN RESOURCES DIVISION
MEMORANDUM NO. 98-021
May 28, 1998
MEMO TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: James L. Williams, Jr., City Manager
Rolanda Johnson, Asst. City Manager
Jerry Bauer, Human Resources Manager
SUBJECT: Manaement Compensation and Classification Study
Attached please find a resolution authorizing the City Manager to enter agreement with
Parker and Associates to undertake a review of the current compensation and classification
system for management positions within the City of Decatur, per the attached proposal. The
purpose of the study is to review the current compensation and classification system for
management positions, with the intention of updating it in any areas that require attention. This
process was last undertaken in the early 1990's, and the time has come to once again assess the
appropriateness and effectiveness of the current system. The cost for services quoted in the
proposal is $8,000 plus expenses.
The cost of an alternative proposal, from Slavin Management Consultants, was quoted
last Fall at $14,210, plus expenses. Staff recommends City Council approve the attached
resolution to complete the study of the system. We are prepared to answer any questions you
might have about this matter.
Thank you.
attachment
